Eurasiers are a rare breed in North America, but are very popular in their native Germany and in other parts of Europe. The breed was developed to be the ideal family companion. As such, these dogs form deep bonds with their human and animal companions and need to live in the house with their family in order to flourish. Separated from their family – crated and left alone or kenneled outside of the house – they will pine away from loneliness and their spirit will be broken.
With their families, Eurasiers are intelligent, joyful dogs with an independent streak. They are gentle with children and other animals. Loyal to their family, a Eurasier is reserved around strangers, and will alert the family only when necessary. Their growl can be quite intimidating as it sounds more like a wolf than a dog. Properly socialized, a Eurasier will be a good travel companion and a welcome addition to off-leash dog parks. Easy to train using positive reinforcement techniques, Eurasiers are sensitive to harsh words or reprimands and require consistency and patience in training.
Eurasiers are truly an ideal family dog as they are adaptable to many different situations. They are equally comfortable on the couch, in the dog park, on a walk, in the conformation ring or in the obedience and rally ring.
